The journal focuses on letters, full-length articles, and reviews for the international astronomy community.
What it costs to publish
No open-access fee in 2026. Page charges may apply.
Reading A&A is free for everyone under Subscribe to Open. Publishing can still cost money: A&A may charge per printed page, at a rate set by the first author’s affiliation.
None in 2026
A&A stays open access in 2026 under Subscribe to Open, with no open-access APC. S2O is decided year by year.
€0–€150 per page, depending on affiliation
Charged per page, not per article. The rate depends on the first author’s country and whether their institution subscribes.
Historical rates checked on 2026-09-28. The official tariff page could not be rechecked today (403). These are not a current quotation or an eligibility decision.
Excess pages: €150–€200 each
Ordinary and excess rates are alternatives per page, not flat article fees. Regular papers have separate 12-page main-text and 8-page appendix limits. Check the current rules, author affiliation and any waiver with A&A before submission.
No agreement found
None of the agreements we track covers this journal.
Eligibility always depends on your institution, the corresponding author and the article type.

APC, page charges, over-length, S2O: what each one means
- APC
- Article processing charge: a fee per article to publish it open access. It is not the whole cost.
- Page charges
- A fee per printed or typeset page. It can apply with or without an APC.
- Over-length
- Pages beyond a length limit, billed at a different rate. Each page pays one rate, never both.
- S2O
- Subscribe to Open: subscribers keep the journal free to read, decided year by year. Page charges can still apply.
- Agreement
- A deal between an institution or country and a publisher that may cover the APC. Never automatic.
